Limited Attendance at Mass

We are very excited to offer in-person Mass to St. John’s parishioners! We are working with guidance from the Archdiocese and honoring the recommendations of health officials. The pandemic situation continues to change, so it’s possible the system we are using may also change in the coming weeks. Thank you so much for your patience and cooperation during this time.

sunday and Holy Day Obligations

The faithful have been dispensed from their Sunday and Holy Day obligation to participate in the Mass until Pentecost Sunday, 2021. Keeping the Sabbath holy should include an intentional time in prayer including engagement in the readings for the day, which may be enhanced through watching a pre-recorded or live stream Mass and making spiritual communion.

Holy Day obligation to be restored at Pentecost, May 23, 2021

An important announcement from the Archdiocese of Denver:

The Bishops of Colorado have announced that the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days will be restored on Pentecost Sunday – May 23, 2021 – and all Catholics who are healthy and without significant risk factors or other serious reasons should resume normal Mass attendance in the coming weeks.

Catholics are encouraged to use the Easter season to prayerfully contemplate why they are called to Mass every week, and if necessary, educate themselves on the Church’s teachings on the obligation, including acceptable reasons to still stay home.

Those reasons include those who are sick, have been exposed to the virus, have serious health risks, or are prevented from attending because of capacity limits at their parish.

Parishes will continue to take prudent steps to ensure public Masses are celebrated in a safe manner.

Does this mean every Catholic is obligated to go to Mass?

No.  Long before this pandemic, the Church has always recognized that there are “serious” or “grave” reasons that prevent Catholics from attending Mass.

For example, if a person is sick or homebound, or living/visiting areas of the world where access to the Mass is limited, or a situation arises that prevents travel (snowstorm or flat tire), such persons would not be bound by the obligation.

In the case of this pandemic, serious or grave reasons would include:

  • Anyone who is sick, symptomatic, or has been recently exposed to the coronavirus. Protecting the health of others is an act of Christian charity and our moral duty to one another.

  • Anyone with significant health risk factors that requires them to avoid public spaces, or if you care for someone with significant risk factors.

  • Anyone who cannot attend Mass through no fault of their own, for example, if a parish has reached capacity.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN-UP FOR:

  • Spanish Mass

  • Daily Mass

  • Parking lot Mass - if you plan to remain in your vehicle

parking lot mass info - Sundays at 9:00am

The parking lot is open to anyone who wants to attend and will be first come, first served; not by invitation or sign-up.  Plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes before Mass.  Once the parking lot is full, no additional cars will be admitted.  Park only in designated parking spaces.  Do not park in fire lanes, crosswalks, hash marked areas, or along the perimeter.  We will bring communion to you, so there's no need for you to exit your vehicles.  We will not be able to bring the Eucharist to anyone parked outside the church parking lot.  We kindly ask that you avoid congregating outside your vehicles before, during, or after Mass.

We’re glad to have you back!

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to work to bring the Mass to as many people as possible. We are looking forward to seeing you!
