Church landscaping draws us to the beauty of nature and God’s design.  At St. John’s there are 13 small gardens spread across the church, the school, and the rectory.  It's a lot for our current garden ministry to manage.  If you can adopt a garden and maintain it (planting, weeding, watering, etc), your help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you for your consideration and assistance!

Find a description of each garden below!

 MEETING

SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 2024 - 10:00AM IN CHURCH BASEMENT

We will discuss the garden ministry and take a tour of the campus and what each garden needs.

A-1 The Front of the Elementary School

Hand watered. Under the windows the garden is planted with seed each year. Usually with marigolds in the fron and Zinnia’s to the back, after the ground has been turned and raked.

A-2 The main entrance to the school

Hand watered. Ceramic large pots cleaned, filled, and raked, new potting soil if necessary and fertilized with Cosmic coat fertilizer. The flowers arrive the day of the school’s May crowning. The children provide potted plants or single plants, but all are used in the gardens around the entire parish campus. The existing list is available and that list is sent to the principal about five weeks in advance (or earlier) by the gardener in charge of that garden.

The front of the large statue of Mary is also planted and sometimes the flagstone is weeded and the mailbox wiped off. The flowers are pulled in the fall and those containers have pine branches laid across the top and a decoration or two put on top. It is gardener’s choice to decorate further.

A-3 The island garden located on the Rotunda side of the building

Hand watered. The island garden just needs a touch of care. The grass creeps into the wood chips and they need to be turned and new bags of chips added.

It is planted and needs little things, like trimming a shrub or moving a dead plant, etc. Of the gardens, this is easier to maintain. With some fertilizer and care it holds its own.

A-4 The children’s prayer garden outside the 4th grade classroom

Hand watered. This garden is also planted seasonally with flowers from the May crowning. The 4th grade teacher and students use this garden as a study area. The benches need to be refinished and the fountain needs to be addressed.

B-1 The pond area by church entrance

Someone to train as a substitute or a 2nd person to co-manage the pond.

B-2 The garden going up the slope to St. Francis

The garden that surrounds the statue needs trimming. It continues in the back of the statue. Otherwise cleaning up that area makes it easier to care for the garden. Work on this garden is in conjunction with the pond maintenance, but the garden is independent of the pond.

C-1 The St. Theresa garden in front of the middle school

Hand watered. The barrels are planted with flowers from the May crowning. it faces the front and has a full on rose garden. It also has three rose of Sharon plants. The greenery needs to be trimmed and the sidewalk and flagstone cleaned.

D1 and 2 The Rectory

Water system installed. The Rectory has plants in front and along the fence line. These gardens have a lot of roses that need regular trimming and maintenance. The sidewalk and flagstone also need to be cleared off.

E-1 The planters into the Adoration chapel

Drip irrigation system (must be checked regularly). These plants can be purchased when the Sweethearts of the Knights hold their plant sale. More work could be done here to enhance the entrance to the chapel.

E-2 The Blessed Lady and side entrance to the church

Hand watered. The snowball bushes going int the church by the chapel. The wood chips are turned in the spring as the chips really perk up and new chips possibly added. Overall this garden needs regular clean-up.

F-1 Veterans Memorial garden and Mary prayer garden

Hand watered. Flowers here are also from the school’s May crowning. Others are added by individuals. Future plans include a possible new fence behind and possibly pavers from the sidewalk to the flagstone. There has been a water system installed to put a sprinkler on that side. It has yet to be finished.

F-2 Veterans Memorial garden and surrounding area

A very special garden, it has the most diligent care and most frequent planting and clean-up. The cement needs to be cleaned. The flowers here are planted before Memorial Day. The Knights host a service at this location on Memorial Day. The Knights set the Veterans Memorial up but the grounds are done by the gardeners. A few of the flowers are from the school’s May crowning. This garden overall involves more upkeep than some of the other gardens on the campus.

G-1 Bread of Life Hall

There are two gardens in front of the Bread of Life Hall. The garden needs regular clean-up and also the grasses there need a seasonal clipping. The chips can be turned and new ones applied.

G-2 Roses in front of church office

This ground needs to be monitored for over-watering by the sprinkler system. The roses there are regularly trimmed back and could be fertilized. Gardens require minimal care.
